building blocks of proteins diagram

The basic building blocks of proteins are called amino acids. In proteins, amino acids are arranged into a linear molecule called a polypeptide chain. Some proteins only consist of a single polypeptide chain while more complex proteins are made out of multiple polypeptide chains bonded together. The proteins of living organisms need about 20 amino acids as building blocks or monomers. These are available in the cytoplasmic matrix as an amino acid pool. II. DNA as Specificity Control: A cell, in order to maintain its own special characteristics, must manufacture proteins exactly similar to those present already in it.

The diagram below shows the general structure of an amino acid. Building blocks of proteins Just like the earlier carbohydrate and lipid molecules 'R' represents groups such as –CH3 and –C2H5. There are about 20 commonly found amino acids but you will not need to know them all. Instead, learn the basic structure shown above.

B uilding Blocks of Proteins: We all know that proteins are essential to living organisms.
